I began writing 'Island Impressions' as Copenhagen went into lockdown due to Covid 19 in March 2020. I usually need lived experience to inspire the pseudo-science of songwriting/recording, so this lead to questions of if it was even possible to write honest music if you cant express lived emotion through it. I moved from Copenhagen a few months after in the summer of 2020 to the Island in which I live on in Sweden called 'Ingarö' located in Stockholm's archipelago.

The behavior of the landscape, which was different from anything I had seen in Australia, quickly brought on the visions of inspiration I needed to construct a new record. I was eager to explore the island with my fiancé after being cooped up in an apartment for so long - we would regularly pick berries, mushrooms, swim in the sea, and go fishing. These activities gave birth to rhythms and grooves through action and movement. Add to that the sunsets and sunrises, mirror-like seascape, sights of Elks, Deer, rare native birds and the cold and unpleasant winter, I quickly started to convert all these experiences into timestamps through sound. Listening to Durutti Column would inspire me to incorporate electric guitars through my newly purchased RE-501 chorus echo into my own alleged version of house music.
I ran a lot of my jams through the chorus echo to help throw the music into the past. Other go-to instruments were my Casio CZ5000, DSI Tempest, OB12, 707, and a big shout out to Kris Baha for the lend of his 808.

On re-listen, the album feels like a folder of different mind-states, impressions, from my time on the island and mentally processing being so far away from family and friends during what was one of the most challenging years of my life.

Like so many others, this came like a bolt out of the blue and, even though it's well before payday, I had to have this astonishing album on vinyl to prove it exists. The feel of the tunes makes me feel like the Impressions do, Curtis Mayfield, the big spaces and instinctive horns and stuff drifting in and out. Great grooves and I can see lots of ghosts nodding along to this with big smiles on their faces. At last! Anthony Cottrell
